Wrote this song for HOPE Japan which is an NGO doing good stuff in Cambodia and the Philippines. I was noticing how I so easily tend toward cynicism and negativity in songwriting, so I thought I'd try to write something that was positive, and even hopeful.
lyrics
A humble lunch - soup and sandwiches
In boxes on a stony ledge
A line of hungry men
A son asks, "Why are we here every week?"
"With old men on a losing streak,"
"We could probably find some better friends"
The father's only words
The best advice he'd ever heard
There's a sunshine
That you need to find
In everyone you're looking at
The light that's in you
It's in them too
Just don't forget about that
Self-assured, strong, and cynical
The safest life but oh so dull
We stay a million miles apart
The other path, the logic of the wise
That "without a teardrop in your eye"
"There'll be no rainbow in your heart"
Love’s an elementary creed
That breaks us and them down to you and me
